 Chris Kirk

Chris began playing at the age 10 with the Long Eaton Silver Prize band after 8 years he moved to Ilkeston Brass on assistant principal cornet. Shortly afterwards he was dazzled by the bright lights of the Championship Section, joining Ibstock Building Products, where he remained until 1982, when he joined the Metropolitan Police. 1982 to 1992 became what Chris calls his “not playing properly” period, evidence to this being he got married to Pauline, on what would have been the area weekend. Having returned to the fold, Chris has played for Hitchin and Regent Brass before joining Welwyn. Chris is the current chairman of the band, he has also held the post of secretary. Chris and Pauline have been married for 21 years and she still doesn’t like brass bands and the kids aren’t too keen either. Chris is currently posted as a Detective Constable at Scotland Yard. Outside the band and the job he loves, he also enjoys cricket, reading and will always and forever be a Nottingham Forest supporter.

  Soprano

 David Quinlan

David started learning cornet aged 6 under the tutorship of his father Michael with the City of Waterford Brass, Waterford Ireland. David went on to have trumpet lessons with Patrick Kennedy, gaining a place in the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland aged 13. David progressed through the ranks with the band, moving on to the Soprano Cornet seat in 1986. David remained on Soprano Cornet during the most successful period of the band contesting history, winning several national senior titles with the band. Away from the brass band scene, David continued playing trumpet with the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland, studying privately with Mark O’Keeffe. David also played for many musicals and orchestral concerts in Waterford and the South-East of Ireland. After completing a degree in Applied Computing, David relocated to the Isle of Man in 1993 to work as a computer software engineer. On the Isle of Man, David continued playing trumpet in musicals and with the Manx Sinfonia and the Blue Train Big Band, having occasional lessons with Howard Snell. David also played Cornet and Soprano Cornet with Manx Concert Brass, winning several area contests in the 4th and 3rd Section. In 2003 David relocated to London where he successfully auditioned for a Solo Cornet seat with the Aveley and Newham band. With the Aveley and Newham Band, David won the Grand Shield in 2006, qualifying for the British Open. David has also deputised with many other bands in the London area including Redbridge Brass, GUS Virtuosi (Travelsphere), Northfleet Brass, Regent Brass, the BT Band and the world famous Grimethorpe Colliery Band. David continues to play trumpet with the London Jazz Collective, Strong Brass Quintet and occasionally for musicals and with the Urban Big Band, the Adoramus Orchestra and the Beckenham Chorale. David is looking forward to the challenges that playing Soprano Cornet for the Welwyn Garden City band has to offer.
