2nd Prize at Crawley
Sunday 18th May saw the band take the second prize in the SCABA Entertainments Contest, which held at the Hawth Theatre, Crawley. This was our first placing in nearly five years and will be the stepping stone to future success.
The adjudicator Mr David Horsfield said the following:
Musical performance 56/60
Entertainment 26/30
Deportment 8/10
Prelude on Tallis
An impressive opening number and you show good detail in dynamic contrast.
Charivari
Exciting sounds and confident playing from the soloist. In the “lento” a good shape with a fine sense of “rubarto” from the soloist; and the waltz section shows control and excitement is created, dazzling technique, bravo.
Valero
Style well achieved and the balance between percussion and brass impressive. A good rhtymic feel for the music and some tight playing. Very convincing show.
Benedictus
Contrasts well and you achieve a well disciplined quieter moment; not without an anxious moment. In C we lose the tranquil feel a little(very difficult and I’m pleased you go for the quiet dynamics). Whoops. Only an occasional intonation problem; a brave choice.
Shine as the light
Original work always welcome! In the allegro neat playing and well directed. G shows good ensemble and again nice dynamics. J – K well handled, and tasteful playing from the cornet soloist and a lovely flowing shape in L. Excitement is created, a little unhappy into R. In U quite well restrained and the quality of the band sound shows.
Thank you a well balance programme.
